Counter-drone interceptors

Defeating small drones has become a distinct procurement category rather than a subset of air defense, because the economics of traditional interceptors do not work against targets costing a few thousand dollars. The response has split into several approaches: low-cost kinetic interceptors designed specifically for this threat, gun-based systems with programmable ammunition, electronic attack, and directed energy where it is mature enough to field.

Layering is the consensus answer, since no single method covers every case. Electronic attack fails against autonomous drones flying pre-programmed routes without a datalink to jam. Kinetic interceptors work but consume inventory. Directed energy struggles in poor weather. The practical requirement is usually a combination, integrated with detection and command systems, which favours suppliers who can deliver an architecture rather than a single effector.

Coverage follows interceptor development and production contracts, drone incursions at airports and military sites, domestic airspace authority decisions determining who may engage a drone over civilian territory, and test and demonstration results. This is among the fastest-moving procurement areas, with requirements often issued as urgent needs rather than through normal programme cycles.
