Engines & propulsion
Coverage of aero engines, propulsion systems and the certification barriers that make the segment unusually defensible.
Why this segment matters
Propulsion is among the most concentrated segments in aerospace, and for structural reasons. Developing a new engine requires enormous capital, testing over many years, and materials expertise in single-crystal turbine blades, thermal barrier coatings and high-temperature alloys that very few organisations possess. Certification adds years more. The result is a small group of global players whose positions are difficult to contest regardless of demand.
The business model reinforces that concentration. Engines are frequently sold at low or negative margin and recovered through decades of spares and long-term service agreements, which means the value of a programme win is realised over its whole service life rather than at delivery. Military propulsion adds adaptive cycle and next-generation programmes where development risk is carried across long timelines.
Coverage follows engine programme awards and selections, long-term service agreements, materials and turbine component supply, test and certification milestones, and production rate changes. Note that a programme loss in this segment has consequences extending decades beyond the decision itself.
