Hypersonics

Coverage of hypersonic weapons, glide vehicles, thermal protection materials and the test infrastructure they require.

Why this segment matters

Hypersonic weapons divide into boost-glide vehicles and air-breathing cruise missiles, with different technical challenges and different industrial bases. The shared difficulty is sustained flight at extreme speed: thermal protection materials, guidance that functions through plasma, and propulsion able to operate across a wide speed range each represent problems that have consumed decades of research.

Test infrastructure is an underappreciated constraint. Ground facilities capable of replicating hypersonic conditions are scarce, and flight test opportunities are limited and expensive, which slows iteration in a way that is unusual for modern engineering programmes. Programmes in this segment have a long record of schedule slippage for this reason.

Coverage follows test milestones and failures, materials and propulsion contracts, defensive tracking programmes aimed at detecting hypersonic threats, and international programme announcements. Claims of operational capability in this field should be read carefully: the gap between a successful test and a deployed weapon is typically many years.
