Logistics & sustainment
Coverage of sustainment, spares, readiness and the contractor support keeping fleets operational.
Why this segment matters
Sustainment consumes a majority of the lifetime cost of most defense platforms, yet attracts a fraction of the attention given to acquisition. Readiness rates — the share of a fleet actually available to operate — depend on spare parts availability, depot throughput and maintenance workforce, and low readiness is a persistent problem across most Western militaries regardless of budget levels.
The commercial appeal is stability. Sustainment revenue recurs across a platform's service life, is less exposed to programme cancellation than development work, and often carries better margins than competitively bid production. Performance-based logistics arrangements, where a contractor is paid for availability rather than for parts supplied, shift risk toward the supplier but reward those able to manage it. Predictive maintenance using fleet data is the main technical change reshaping the segment.
Coverage follows sustainment and logistics contracts, readiness reporting, spare parts and supply chain disruptions, depot capacity investment, and the recurring debate over organic government capability versus contractor support. This segment generates less dramatic news than procurement but more durable revenue.
