Maritime autonomy & naval drones

Coverage of uncrewed surface and underwater vessels, and the low-cost sea denial they enable.

Why this segment matters

Uncrewed surface vessels have demonstrated that a small, cheap craft can threaten major warships, changing assumptions about sea control in confined waters. That lesson has driven interest in both directions: navies want their own uncrewed fleets for strike, surveillance and mine countermeasures, and they need defences against the same capability in the hands of others.

The attraction is force structure economics. A crewed warship takes years to build and carries a crew that must be trained, housed and protected; an uncrewed vessel can be produced faster, deployed in numbers and risked in ways a crewed platform cannot. The constraints are autonomy software maturity, communications in contested environments, and the legal and doctrinal questions around engagement without a human aboard.

Coverage follows vessel procurement and prototype programmes, mine countermeasure contracts, autonomy software awards, and incidents demonstrating the capability in operational use. The segment is young enough that programme structures and requirements are still shifting.
