Why this segment matters
Energetics are the least visible and most binding constraint in munitions production. Nitrocellulose, TNT and specialised propellant formulations are produced at a small number of plants, several of them decades old, and expansion is complicated by safety separation requirements, environmental permitting and the difficulty of siting facilities that handle explosives at scale. A shell body can be machined in weeks; the material that fills it cannot be sourced as quickly.
Solid rocket propellant sits in the same category, gating missile production independently of final assembly capacity. Insensitive munitions requirements, intended to reduce accidental detonation risk, add reformulation and requalification work that further slows the introduction of new capacity.
Coverage follows plant expansion and construction announcements, feedstock supply agreements, government funding for industrial base capacity, permitting decisions and safety incidents. This segment is the clearest example of a physical constraint that money alone cannot resolve quickly — capacity announcements should be read with lead times of several years in mind.
