Quantum computing

Coverage of quantum sensing, post-quantum cryptography and quantum computing programmes with defense applications.

Why this segment matters

Quantum technologies matter to defense through three distinct paths, and conflating them causes most of the confusion around the segment. Quantum sensing offers navigation without satellite signals — directly relevant given how effectively GPS is now jammed — and is the nearest-term application. Post-quantum cryptography addresses the risk that current encryption becomes breakable, driving migration programmes that are underway regardless of when capable machines arrive. Quantum computing itself, applied to optimisation or materials, remains the most distant.

The investment implication is that timelines differ by an order of magnitude across these three. Sensing prototypes are being field-tested; cryptographic migration is a live compliance requirement; general-purpose quantum computing remains a research programme with contested milestones and no consensus on when useful advantage arrives.

Coverage follows government research awards, sensing and navigation trials, cryptographic standards and migration mandates, and hardware milestone claims. Treat the last category with particular scepticism: many listed companies in this segment are pre-revenue or near it, several are capped by the financial gate in our scoring, and announcements are often calibrated to funding cycles rather than technical readiness. See our methodology for how tracked companies are scored.
