Unmanned aerial systems (drones)
Coverage of unmanned aerial systems: strike and reconnaissance drones, the counter-UAS systems built to stop them, and the suppliers behind both.
Why this segment matters
Unmanned aircraft have changed the cost equation of modern warfare. Attritable airframes costing thousands can threaten platforms costing millions, and procurement plans across NATO, the Middle East and Asia have been rewritten around that arithmetic. The result is a procurement cycle that moves faster than traditional defense programs, with contracts awarded and revised on timescales of months rather than decades.
The segment splits into four groups whose economics differ sharply. Platform manufacturers build the aircraft, from tactical ISR drones to one-way loitering munitions. Counter-UAS specialists sell the defensive half — detection, jamming and interception — currently the fastest-moving sub-segment as airports and military bases face repeated incursions. Component and subsystem suppliers provide flight controllers, motors, optics and secure datalinks. Autonomy and eVTOL developers work on adjacent markets where defense is one application among several.
Coverage in this feed tends to cluster around a few recurring events: program awards and budget lines, export approvals, drone incursions at civilian and military sites, supply-chain constraints on motors, optics and rare-earth magnets, and regulatory decisions on beyond-visual-line-of-sight flight.
One structural caveat for investors: several of the most significant players are privately held, including the most active US drone contractor and the world's largest armed-drone exporter. Public-market exposure therefore runs mostly through primes with drone divisions, counter-UAS pure plays, and a tail of smaller speculative names.
