Missile defense

Coverage of layered air and missile defense, interceptors, tracking sensors and the magazine depth problem.

Why this segment matters

Missile defense is fundamentally an economics problem before it is a technical one. Interceptors typically cost far more than the weapons they defeat, and an adversary can usually add attacking missiles more cheaply than a defender can add interceptors. Every architecture debate in this segment comes back to that asymmetry, which is why lower-cost effectors and directed energy attract disproportionate attention relative to their current maturity.

Magazine depth is the practical constraint. Recent conflicts have shown how quickly interceptor inventories deplete under sustained attack, and replenishment runs into the same solid rocket motor and energetics bottlenecks that limit offensive missile production. The sensing layer matters as much as the shooters: tracking targets across their flight path increasingly depends on space-based sensors rather than ground radar alone.

Coverage follows interceptor production contracts and rate increases, architecture and homeland defense policy decisions, tracking layer awards, allied procurement of air defense systems, and test results. Announced architectures in this domain frequently change scope between political cycles.
