Photonics & directed energy
Coverage of high-energy lasers, high-power microwave systems and the photonics supply chain behind them.
Why this segment matters
Directed energy is the most cited answer to the cost asymmetry created by cheap drones: an interceptor missile costing far more than the target it destroys is an unsustainable exchange, while a laser shot costs comparatively little. That arithmetic explains sustained funding interest despite decades of slower-than-promised progress.
The obstacles are engineering rather than conceptual. Power generation, thermal management and beam control in field conditions remain difficult, and performance degrades in rain, fog and dust — precisely the conditions in which air defense is needed. High-power microwave systems address a different problem, defeating drone swarms across an area rather than one target at a time. Both categories have moved from laboratory to field trials, but fielded operational systems remain limited relative to the attention the segment receives.
Coverage clusters around test and demonstration results, prototype deployments, power and cooling subsystem contracts, and optics and photonics component supply. Treat timelines with caution: this segment has a long history of capability announcements that precede fielding by many years.
