Military space has shifted from a small number of large, exquisite satellites toward proliferated constellations of smaller spacecraft in low orbit. The rationale is resilience: a constellation of many cheap satellites is far harder to neutralise than a handful of expensive ones. That shift has changed the industrial structure of the segment, opening it to manufacturers who can produce spacecraft at rate rather than one at a time.

Missile warning and tracking has become the most funded application, alongside secure communications and space-based sensing. Commercial imagery and analytics providers now sit inside defense supply chains, selling data rather than hardware — a different business model with different margin and contract-duration characteristics. Ground segment and user terminals, often overlooked, represent a substantial share of programme cost.

Coverage clusters around constellation tranche awards, launch and deployment milestones, payload and bus contracts, commercial imagery agreements, and orbital debris or spectrum regulation. The segment mixes established primes with newer manufacturers whose valuations often price in production rates not yet demonstrated.
